Soon the game will feature a long-awaited butterfly knife, also known as a balisong. This elegant weapon has a long history, and its skillful spinning has become a special sub-culture. In Warface this knife will become a prized arsenal decoration of all collectors thanks to its awesome animation and the variety of skins for it.
Balisong Knife
According to one of the versions, the knife has Philippine origins. Its name “balisong” means a “broken horn” in a local dialect. Presumably, this name appeared due to the animal horns being used for the knife’s handles. Traditionally, a balisong was passing from father to son and was a sacral weapon – in an open position its three ends symbolize the cosmic trinity – “Sky”, “Earth” and “Water”.
The other balsong origins version claims that a similarly styled knife was brought to Philippines from Europe during the Spanish dominion.
None of these theories have concrete proof or contradictions, so the true story about the creation of balisong remains a mystery.
The knife got its contemporary design in 1905 from Perfecto de Leon – a blacksmith from Philippines. His legacy remains. The weapon’s widely used name “butterfly knife” appeared due to the trajectory of its handles’ movements when opening the knife – the trajectory strikingly similar to the rotatory action of insect’s wings.

Balisongs gained wide popularity after the Second World War. American troops were bringing tons of these exotic weapons home from Philippines. Thanks to its simple and reliable construction the knife quickly became popular, especially among street gangs and criminal organizations.
Balisong popularity and its unique construction naturally led to “flipping” – the art of spinning the butterfly. Master-flippers can perform spectacular and virtuosic combinations and tricks with this knife.
Nowadays American Benchmade 42 with blade length of 4,2 inches (10,66 cm) is considered to be the classic balisong.
